This one is by no means a great musical, but is an amiable, entertaing music-comedy from Hollywood’s and MGM’s Golden Era, produced by the Joe Pasternak Unit (not the more “artistic” Freed Unit), which usually produced the musicals which starred such performers as Kathryn Grayson, Jane Powell, Mario Lanza, Esther Williams, June Allyson, Van Johnson, etc.

I first saw this film as a small kiddie on a local TV channel and was highly amused by it, on one of those boring winter afternoons after school (I didn’t do my homework, watched this movie instead and I haven’t regretted it in over 21 years).

Sinatra stars as the highly-impressionable, shy, mild, bandit of the title, who’s unwilling to inherit his father’s credits as one of the most notorious rogues of California. Grayson looks very pretty as the Governor’s daughter and gets to sing some nice songs. J. Carrol Naish more or less steals the show as Sinatra’s mentor and sidekick and Mildred Natwick, as Grayson’s aunt, is equally funny. Clinton Sundberg is also quite funny as the Governor’s (Mikhail Rasumny) Colonel, who’s continually being “demoted” by him.

Musical Highest point: The highly energetic dance-ensemble by the great Ann Miller & Cyd Charisse, who “confront” each other, over Ricardo Montalban’s affections.

The reviews I had read about this film were not very good and it had put me of purchasing it, but I’m glad I did as I find it a very funny film that is everything a good musical should be. I think Frank Sinatra is good in the film even though it is said that this film destoyed his career, but then maybe my tastes are different from most.

Christie Love is funny and action-packed. A black female cop out to keep the man out of her face and the drugs out of the hood. Teresa Graves gives a wonderful performance, proof that Pam Grier isn’t the end all be all when it comes to women in blaxploitation movies.

…P>I like it! A lot.

… The tape spent quite some time on the bookshelf but now that I have finally seen it I am in love!

It must be the box art that put me off, a garrish watercolor blending an approximation of Teresa Graves’ face with Pam Grier’s, uh, other attributes. Learn from my mistake and don’t let that put you off, the movie really is a blast.

Production values for this film are definitely made-for-TV, B-grade standard. But for less than ten bucks you get two competently realised car crashes plus a couple of unequal struggles between Miss Graves and the evil drug-lords’ henchmen.
The story isn’ t too shabby either. It succeeds to put just enough motivation into both actors and actions.

Not that I would know anything about it but the dialog sounds totally ad-lib and incredibly cool all at the same time. The IMDB lists what appear to be TV comedy gigs and Teresa Graves really displays the timing of a great comedian.

The IMDB bio for Teresa Graves consists of just one lousy cryptic sentence, saying that she curtailed her career because she allowed her religion to limit her role choices. On the basis of this one film alone I find that hard to believe. The title character is sexy, tough and cool, the very poster girl of an independent woman.

It was a bit weird watching this film because to me she looked so much like Whitney Houston, a taller, fitter, Whitney Houston with a great sense of humor. Oh, and one of her junkie contacts looks exactly like the girl from present day THE PARKERS TV show. So weird!

The only reason for me to withhold the fifth star is the bad audio and so-so visual quality of the budget tape published by Ideal Enterprises.

I managed to find this a few days before its official release date and am happy to report that it finally gives this classic film the treatment it deserves. The video and audio have been restored from orignal source material with noticeable improvements over the previous DVD transfer. The picture has none of the scratches and dust that were present on the earlier version, and there is a Dolby stereo option as well as the original mono. The stereo soundtrack offers greater clarity and depth and there’s no low-level hum or hiss.

Besides offering a major improvement in the quality of the image and sound, the new DVD also includes a good selection of extras. There’s a 25 minute “Backstory” from AMC that is very informative and entertaining. There are two separate commentary tracks, one with Celeste Holm, Christopher Mankiewicz (Joseph’s son), and Kenneth Geist, the other with Sam Staggs, author of “All About ‘All About Eve’”. There are
promotional interviews with Davis and Baxter, four newsreels, a trailer, and a restoration comparison.

The restoration comparison is one of the strangest that I’ve seen. Instead of an audio track explaining the problems and processes involved in the transfer, there’s a series of screens with text printed on them. There then follows a series of comparisons from various versions of the film. There’s nothing really wrong with any of this, but considering the huge amount of time and effort that goes into a restoration of this magnitude, I expected something a bit more dynamic.

For any “All About Eve” fan, old or new, this is the DVD we have been waiting for, and at five dollars less than the original DVD, a real bargain.

Highly recommended!

Bette Davis made this movie in 1950 when her career was faltering;her last film was the insipid “Beyond the Forest” (now considered a minor camp classic by some.) “All About Eve” is relished by many who hail it as Davis’s all-time greatest performance(which is,in all fairness, arguable) as the forty year old magnetic actress Margo Channing. Many also feel Davis never looked better than she does here (her costume designer for this was the legendary Edith Head). The acting is genuinely excellent and the screenplay is music to the ears;as a consolation for not winning the AA,(it went to Judy Holliday)Davis received the coveted New York Film Critics Award for Best Actress.George Sanders is peerless as the poison pen critic Addison De Witt;( he won the academy award for best supporting actor.) Thelma Ritter is hilarious as the wise old companion of Margo’s who’s seen it all happen before. Celeste Holm gives an absolutely sparkling performance as Karen Richards(she tells Eve “I’m the lowest form of celebrity” she being the wife of playwright Lloyd Richards(Hugh Marlowe, whose wooden personality suits the role he plays.)Gregory Ratoff’s timing in the “bicarbonate of soda” scene is amazing and Gary Merrill is right on as the cynical Bill whose age (32) creates insecurity for Margo; she fears she’ll lose him to some young “babe”.The film holds up extremely well, considering it will be 50 years old next year.Marilyn Monroe has an amusing bit as a “Graduate of the Copacabana School of Dramatic Arts” Finally we come to the gal who played the “little worm” of the title: Anne Baxter. She is astonishingly straightforward and realistic in her interpretation of the louse;if she seems to be a bit on the drab side, it’s only because she’s underplaying to the “Queen Mother”, studying and using her idol as a stepping stone in order to get her name in electric lights and reign supreme as a Lady of the Theatre; in other words, she’s diabolical as HELL! If you’ve never seen this movie, you’re in for a treat. If you have’nt seen the DVD version do so;the print is crystal clear and adds immensely to the film’s viewing pleasure. This is Mankiewicz’s masterpiece and it won the Oscar for the Best Picture of 1950.

The movie is called “Traitor,” and the implication is that the main character, played by Don Cheadle, has betrayed his own country. But it’s nowhere near that simple. Some think he’s a traitor to the United States while others think he’s a traitor to Islam. He may be a traitor to his own beliefs, his loyalties divided between his Muslim faith and his American upbringing. By the end of the film, no one is any closer to understanding what he believes, himself least of all. He’s a double agent frequently confronted by conflicting ideologies, and it’s slowly but surely tearing him apart. One way this movie succeeds is that we’re able to feel for this character no matter what side he’s on; we can sense the anguish he feels, the torment of being a misfit in every culture he immerses himself in. We see in his face the unease and guilt he’s forced to live with everyday.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Traitor! Click Here

Cheadle plays Samir Horn, who was born in Sudan but raised in the United States. Thirty years ago, his father was killed in a terrorist attack, although it’s unclear which side was responsible; it may have been an anti-Muslim faction, but it may also have been devout Muslims who opposed his beliefs. Whatever the case, Horn is now a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant for the United States Army, someone trained to infiltrate terrorist organizations and gather information. It seems his loyalties have shifted; while in Yemen, he’s caught selling detonators to a group of jihadists, and after a brief shootout, everyone is arrested. In prison, he befriends Omar (Saïd Taghmaoui), who is apparently in league with people on the outside, people willing to risk incarceration or death to free their brother Muslims. A frenetic jailbreak ensues. Not long after, Horn becomes entangled in a terrorist conspiracy, one that would result in several major attacks on American soil.

Two FBI agents have been assigned to locate and arrest Horn. One is Roy Clayton (Guy Pearce), who, interestingly enough, once considered World Religions as a college major. He claims to take his own Christian faith seriously, but unlike Horn with the Koran, we never see him reading from the Bible or quoting any of its passages. We’re never told what Max Archer (Neal McDonough) believes, although it’s obvious that, as far as his job is concerned, he’s all about getting results as quickly as possible; in an early scene, he gets impatient with Horn and subsequently punches him in the stomach. Clayton is much more calm and collected, and he understands that you get information from a suspect by pushing his buttons, not by letting him push yours. Indeed, Horn is a tough nut to crack, probably because he knows how to keep secrets from both sides.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Traitor! Click Here

To describe the plot any further would not only give too much away, it would also require a lot of explaining, more so than anyone would be willing to read. As Horn says, “The truth is complicated.” It would be more accurate to say that the truth is elusive, simply because I’m not convinced he knows what the truth is. He probably no longer knows which side represents good and which side represents evil. His beliefs are divided between what he reads in the Koran and what he sees going on; one passage states that killing one man is like killing all mankind, yet he’s surrounded by Islamic extremists who commit murder to get their point across. He’s serious about his faith, but it’s clear he doesn’t always understand it. He certainly doesn’t understand how certain ideas can be misconstrued out of all reason, such as Takfiri, or blending in. A Pakistani terrorist named Fareed (Aly Khan) baffles Horn by saying that jihadists living in America drink alcohol and eat pork in order to blend in. Both acts go against Islamic beliefs.

Horn would probably argue that murder, no matter how justified, also goes against Islamic beliefs (I would make the same argument, although I’m well aware that many people would not). If there were no jihadists, if terrorism were to be eradicated entirely, Horn would not need to be a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant. He would not have to infiltrate enemy hideouts and pretend to be on their side. Only then would his mind be at ease; he could worship in peace without having to worry about suspicious activity in American and Muslim communities. Is it unreasonable to suggest that the vast majority of Muslims long for the same peace of mind? I don’t think so. Neither is the idea that there’s a gigantic difference between jihad terrorists and those of Islamic faith.

That may ultimately be the point “Traitor” is trying to make, although it’s difficult to tell with a story actively trying to be ambiguous. Director Jeffrey Nachmanoff and producer/co-story creator Steve Martin (yes, that Steve Martin) have crafted a political drama that forces the audience to think really hard, more about the main character’s beliefs than about the actual plot. Themes of not belonging and divided loyalties are certainly not new, but that doesn’t mean they’re no longer used effectively; “Traitor” succeeds on many levels, not the least of which is Don Cheadle’s believable performance. He above all else is what gets the story off the ground, allowing it to be much more than a run-of-the-mill thriller. He adds genuine emotional touches in the subtlest of ways, from precise eye movements to random breathing patterns. Essentially, he makes it real, especially since he never reveals which side his character feels most connected with.

Traitor is a fantastic thriller starring Don Cheadle as Samir Horn, a Muslim who was born in Sudan and moved to America as a teenager. He grows up to be a Special Forces soldier for the US, and as the movie begins, we see him moving through the Middle East selling explosives.

His fate crosses with two FBI agents, played by Guy Pearce and Neal McDonough. Soon the two are crisscrossing the globe hunting Samir, who is becoming more and more involved with a cell led by a terrorist mastermind.

The film is written and directed as a great thriller with enough action and suspense to keep you ocuupied and guessing, but not to the extent that it comes off like a routine action movie trying to be more than it is. The film has several twists and surprises and keeps the viewer engaged throughout.

But everything is held together is by Cheadle, who burnishes his reputation as one of Hollywood’s greatest talents. His Samir is at once devious, treacherous, loving, compassionate, stubborn, and dangerous. Traitor is a great film, but it would not possess the same impact with a lesser talent as its star.

Inspired by the Japanese movie (released in the United States as ANTARTICA), which was based upon the true story of a 1958 Japanese expedition, the real antecedent of this movie is Egerton R. Young’s marvelous memoir of his dogsled team, first published in 1902. This was the first book to detail the different personalities among dogs and the first to describe their work ethic and sense of responsibility.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eight Below! Click Here

Jack London acknowledged his debt to Egerton Young’s memoirs (among other sources) which he took to craft the dogsled team in THE CALL OF THE WILD, something missing in the various incarnations of the novel on film. EIGHT BELOW captures the real intelligence of siberian huskies (well, two of them are malamutes) better than any movie I’ve ever seen. Sure, this is just a movie and tricks were used to make it appear that these dogs do what they seem to do. But huskies do smile, laugh, worry, think, and bond–and if you don’t agree, then you just don’t know them.

Yes, there are some sentimental and maudlin moments in this film, but there is also a sense of naturalism and a declaration of personal responsibility. An adventure film that is rare and welcome and worth seeing again.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eight Below! Click Here

The musical score is beautiful and nicely edited to fit the mood of each scene, ambient but not overwhelming. Both humans and dogs are underplayed, and it struck me as a movie for adults who can use their imagination to fill in the gaps in understated dialogue and character development. The beauty of the scenery is often breathtaking.

It was a nice touch that one of the dogs, the oldest, is named Jack, and one is named Buck. Buck was also the name of the protagonist in THE CALL OF THE WILD and Jack was the name of Egerton Young’s real dog upon which Buck was based. Of course it may be just a coincidence.

The other dogs include the twins, Truman and Dewey (a Democrat and a Republican), Shorty, Max, Shadow, and sweet Maya, the lead dog. Dog people will have no trouble distinguishing between them.

Those who love this film might be also interested in Egerton Young’s MY DOGS OF THE NORTHLAND, Jack London’s THE CALL OF THE WILD, edited and annotated by Daniel Dyer, and Gary Paulsen’s WINTERDANCE: THE FINE MADNESS OF RUNNING THE IDITAROD.

This is an excellent family movie about an Antartica adventure. Although Jason Biggs of American Pie is in it, this time he’s the usual goofball but without any stupid humor and not one bad word anywhere in the film. It’s safe family entertainment. The story is about a scientific post in Antartica that uses eight Huskies to get around with selds in the snow-barren wilderness of the South Pole. Trouble starts for the dogs when Winter arrives early and the dogs have to survive by themselves which is documented in the film as is also the human aspect of leaving the dogs behind to fight for themselves. The scenery and photography is breathtaking and it is a well-made Disney movie. It is based on a true story and that makes it even more interesting. Don’t compare this film to Snow Dogs as this film is not a comedy and the location, storyline and premise are completely different. Aside from the dogs as heros, Paul Walker plays the human hero and he plays the role of an expedition guide very believably. Some concepts of the human psyche which may have been intended to be communicated in this flick, clearly miss the mark as these are not communicated, but it doesn’t matter … it’s a clean family movie which the juniors as well as dog lovers will really appreciate and enjoy. Also, a lot about the behavior and kindness/faithfulness of the four-legged friends is shown. My wife liked this film very much and she said the DVD once released is a definite buy. Although this movie is two hours long and there are some slow passages, the two hours don’t seem like two hours at all. This film is about a very real adventure and it’s well worth watching it.

I first began collecting the Karin Series last year when it was released by Geneon after the third volume it was gone. Gone! and all the trades said it was gone for good! Off into a vast anime oblivion, discontinued due to a failed distribution company. Thankfully My Personal Heroes at Funimation Entertainment caught the rights to distribute Karin and other Geneon Niche titles to the US and Canada.

Well enough of the history lesson. This anime is truly a great piece of art, and No I don’t believe I’m overstating it either. The Original Manga by Yuna Kagesaki differs somewhat from the anime namely the anime could not be an exact expression of Manga-ka Kagesaki’s vision it had to be cut down to fit into a 25 episode series, and “work for TV”. The Manga covers over 13 volumes of text and art. (avilable fom Tokyopop under the title Chibi Vampire) originaly published in “Monthly Dragon Magazine” and “Monthly Comic Dragon” in Japan. The animation was done by JC Staff known for fanservice, but, though evident, it is toned way down in the this series. The now defunct Odex of singapore produced the English dub. The English version was written and directed at Odex by American voice artist and puppetteer. Mr. Paul Pistore. Who’s script provided a very fluid dialect in English, which in my opinion captured the original writers intent fully. I have shaired many e-mails with Mr. Pistore regarding his work on Karin and other more recent projects. The main cast besides Mr. Pistore consists of Ms. Chelsea Curto as Karin Marker, and Mr. Yahav Rom as Kenta Usui. Both are excelent matches for their respective charicters, along with Mr. Pistore and the balance of the cast, well they should all be recognized for their work.

Karin is a very emotional story of unexpected love between classmates Kenta Usui, the new transfer student from the north with funny eyes, and Karin Marker, a popular, yet youthfully awkward child of immigrant parents who has lived her life in Japan as a native aparently since early childhood.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Karin: The Complete Series Box Set! Click Here

Here’s one of the hooks, Karen is a vampire. Or rather her situation is being an outsider in her own family. Instead of sucking or rather drinking human blood Karin’s body overproduces blood which she must either inject into a “victim” or she suffers painful and profuse nose bleeds, this qualifies her as an un-vampire.

“Look for a more friendly vampire mythos in Karin, it’s not the same old Dracula, Twilight, Forever Knight, Ann Rice, stuff. It’s much more… Friendly, as I said, and Karinesque vampires are more like a subspecies of human than the usual ‘undead bloodsucker mythos’ which we’ve all seen before.”

Considering this is a vampire title I was astounded to see the morality that each charicter shows. Kenta Usui dreams of working hard and being a good citizen and a family man. Karin also works hard like Kenta is genuenly a moral person, her family, though vampiric is a traditional nuclear family, and despite family disputes they all appear in their own way to love and support Karin. There really are no villans, only people with different perspectives.

One interisting thing is that Kenta is not bound to Karin by some spell, curse, transdimentional warp, Renfield like devotion, or any other anime cliche’ devise, as I would have expected. His bond to Karin Grows out of his and her personalities, and his desire to be friendly and a good man. Karin’s situation is a little more camplex. She feels uneasy near Kenta and has nose bleeds, she cheers herself, and himself up by making him a bento lunch, daily! As time goes by, boy and girl together, well you know.

I think Love would have come to the couple sooner if they weren’t constantly interupted by, Vampire hunters, classmates, and Karin’s family attempting to stop their budding relationship.

This anime is also very much about acceptance. When Kenta finds out about Karin’s vampiric heritage, he does not freak out, he accepts her as she is. Later Karin’s friends find out her secret and they accept her. Even the supposed villians accept her, and eventualy Karin’s family accepts Kenta, except for her father Henry Marker (voiced by Paul Pistore) who is stereotypicaly overprotective of his teenage daughter.

I think of this series and it makes me smile. It works as a shonen and as a shojo title. It’s so darn emotional and downright sweet, you’ll have to brush your teeth/fangs afterwards, or you’ll get cavities.

Karin is one of those unmistakably quirky but loveable Geneon properties that many anime fans (such as myself) feared would go down with the ship. Fortunately, Funimation has been diligent in their efforts of tossing out the lifeboats for countless such titles by re-releasing them to the North American market in all their original glory.

Released across 6 DVDs, the Funimation version of Karin consists of three thin packs (each containing two discs) within a tasteful cardboard slipcase. The show comes in at a 580-minute runtime and wears a fairly conservative 13+ rating. There is no real nudity to report (save for some covered-up body models in the opening) and the language is friendly to viewers of all ages. Sure there are a few juvenilely creepy vampire moments, but in all, this is definitely a title that will charm members of all age demographics.

The story goes something like this: Karin Maaka may seem like a perfectly normal teeny-bopper/ high school student with all of the usual dilemmas to keep her occupied: Dating, zits, anemia and the desire to bite into people’s necks.

Sure that last one isn’t that uncommon among the teenage set, keep in mind that our title character is in fact the middle child in a family of futuristic vampires who’ve made Japan their home.

As if being a vampire wasn’t enough, Karin is a reverse vampire (or an “un-vampire” as the case may be). This means that she doesn’t rely upon sucking the blood of others to live but rather makes her own supply just like the rest of us. Before you start to wonder if you are in fact a vampire as well, her condition is unique in that she makes too much of the red-stuff and has to bite others to get rid of some of her own.

Here’s the catch, Karin literally has to get rid of her excess corpuscles or risk volatile nose-bleeds as her body rids itself of the extra blood. The good news is that her victims don’t suffer from the bite/ injection but actually feel revitalized and refreshed (a trick that I’m forced to reply upon Red Bull to duplicate).

Another interesting facet of her “condition” is that the mood of those surrounding her has a distinct effect on her body’s blood affinity. In other words, Karin’s body starts working in overdrive in blood production when she’s around miserable people (good thing she doesn’t live around here). As such, the poor girl is often found doing all she can to try to better the moods of those around her.

Following in the footsteps of such classic shows as The Addam’s Family or The Munsters, a lot of Karin’s appeal comes from the fact that her family life is, for all facts and circumstances, surprisingly normal. Karin shares room and board with a brother, Ren and sister Anju with some fairly stereotypical parents (think protective father and quick-to-butt-in mother).

While her family may play the more traditional vampire role, Karin herself (don’t forget she is an un-vampire) lacks some of the typical traits such as vulnerability to sunlight, night vision, and the ability to erase memories. Yes she has the fangs but that only inhibits her on class-picture day.

The show itself just plain works, partially because Karin is a lovable lead character and partially because the whole vampire angle adds a nice element of mystery to the typical high-school comedy genre.

The show is as much High School Musical as it is Twilight and that’s not a bad thing. The heavy load of hiding the fact that she and hers are technically members of the “living dead”, teen romance, high school shenanigans, and a whole lot of coming of age in the modern world spruces things up.

Perhaps its greatest strength is how tastefully and humorously the context manages to parallel Karin’s unique blood dilemma to the budding menstrual cycles of all girls of similar age. As such many of the situations and tense moments have an inherent scale of relatability and realism.

Karin’s biggest weakness comes in the form of the art and animation, which isn’t anything spectacular. Not that either actually take away from a viewer’s ability to enjoy the smooth pacing and just plain fun prose, the backgrounds and character models are nothing spectacular either. The fan-service that managed to cause a bit of a reputation in the manga source-material has pretty much been eliminated entirely in the transition to anime (again except for the opening sequence, which hints toward much more risqué material than the show ever delivers).

The sound track is a mixed bag as well with upbeat pop numbers and smooth instrumentals that perfectly accent the teeny-theme of the show but the English dub isn’t one of the strongest out there. Like the visuals, the dub work is passable but not quite the butter-smooth masterwork that is so common with Funimation properties.

In all, this is a fun show that manages to capture the small moments of teenage life and blend them with a fictional backdrop nearly perfectly. Because the writers initially decided to add a unique twist on the vampire theme, Karin ends up being one of those rare shows that will hold viewer interest regardless of their personal genre tastes. The humor works and the drama never becomes so heavy that it drags the well-constructed prose down.

I found “Bra Boys” eye opening and awe inspiring.

I came across this film by chance and I’ve watched it three times now - each time getting something new out of it.

The surfing is incredible - as you’d expect - and the story of the Atherton brothers and The Bra Boys is fascinating.

I highly recommend this film.

It’s not exactly a state secret that the “Disney Treasures” DVDs have been big money-makers for the company. So how do you squeeze a little extra cash out of a cash cow? Why, start throwing animated shorts onto DVD without remastering them, that’s how!

Yep, the bulk of these cartoons are presented in vintage 20-year-old transfers. The images are soft and low-res, colors are frequently washed-out (I defy you to find the color tan anywhere in “Paul Bunyan”), and Cinemascope films such as “Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom” are presented in non-anamorphic widescreen. If you have a 16X9 TV, prepare yourself for a joyless experience.

The shorts themselves are largely second-tier Disney, with a few bona fide masterpieces such as “Ferdinand the Bull.” Others show that when the Disney artists tackled a new field (such as UPA-style limited animation in “A Cowboy Needs a Horse,” or dimensional animation in “Noah’s Ark,” with its fanciful found-object animals) they could do it better than just about anybody else. Kids may become a tad restless at times, but animation fans and Disney completists will be in heaven.

Bottom line: If Disney’s going to call these shorts “Treasures” they should treat them as such.

Among the four Disney Treasures DVD sets that came out this year for Wave 5 of the popular collection, Disney Rarities, Chronological Donald Volume Two, Legendary Heroes, and Spin and Marty, I do believe this is the set I was most anticipating. “Disney Rarities: Celebrated Shorts” collects some of the most loved one-shot Disney shorts right alongside some of the most unseen! Starting all the way back with Walt’s early Alice films and carrying all the way through to 1962’s “A Symposium On Popular Songs,” the mixed bag that is this 2-disc collection provides treat after treat of beautiful animation, charming stories and songs, and fond childhood memories! Here’s what you get in this gorgeous DVD set!

Disc 1:

Alice’s Wonderland (1923): The first of Walt’s silent Alice Comedies that combined live-action and animation, this charming short stars the adorable little Virginia Davis and costars a young Mr. Disney himself! In it, Walt gives Alice a tour of a magical animation studio which leads to an animated dream sequence for Alice that night.

Alice’s Wild West Show (1924): Probably the best of the Alice comedies I’ve seen, and Virginia’s favorite, the live-action sequences of this are very reminiscent of the early “Little Rascals” films, and, of course, there are animated sequences as well. Alice and her friends are putting on a wild west show, but when bullies chase her costars away, Alice resorts to telling tales of her adventures with Indians and baddies.

Alice Gets In Dutch (1924): Little Alice gets the dunce cap in school one day for playing with a balloon, and when she falls asleep on her stool, she has to deal with a cartoon teacher and her living schoolbooks!

Alice’s Egg Plant (1925): Sadly, Virginia Davis is replaced by Anne Shirley in this short. Also, the charming live-action sequences give way to total animation, aside from the inclusion of live-action Alice, of course. In this story, there’s trouble on Alice’s egg farm when a fowl Russian bird incites a strike. Luckily, Alice and her cat Julius concoct a plan!

Alice In the Jungle (1925): Virginia is back one more time for this tale of animal hi-jinks and lion fighting adventure.

Alice’s Mysterious Mystery (1926): Margie Gay plays Alice in this short where she and Julius go up against an early version of Pete who is an evil dogcatcher turning his captive mutts into sausage! Yes, this is a disturbing cartoon!

Alice the Whaler (1927): Lois Hardwick plays a slightly older Alice, who sails the seas with her animal friends in a cartoon that features a potato peeling mouse in sequences seemingly identical to those in the following year’s “Steamboat Willie!”

Ferdinand the Bull (1938): This cartoon is our sudden jump to color and sound (not including the music that accompanied the preceding Alice shorts). This is the Oscar winning tale of Ferdinand, a pacifist bull that just loves to sit and smell flowers, mistakenly chosen to fight in a bull ring when a bee sting makes him appear ferocious and wild! This is one of those classics you’ll likely remember from your youth, and it also features caricatures of Walt and his animators.

Chicken Little (1943): No, this isn’t Disney’s new, computer-animated feature, this is a classic short about not believing everything you hear and read, with a twisted but very funny ending! I believe this is one of the several Academy Award nominees in this collection!

The Pelican and the Snipe (1944): And, here’s another, I believe. One of the many shorts Disney did with Sterling Holloway (the original voice of Winnie the Pooh) as narrator, this is the cute wartime tale of a sleep-flying Pelican and his loyal and protective, sleep-deprived friend living together on a lighthouse in Uruguay. This was originally planned as part of “The Three Amigos” but was instead released on its own.

The Brave Engineer (1950): Here’s one of my many favorites, the rousing, musical tale of Casey Jones, the brave engineer! The singing narration from Jerry Colonna and crew make this a fun-filled American adventure!

Morris, the Midget Moose (1950): Disney’s Bootle Beetle characters kick-off this classic short as an elder tells two younger bugs the story of two misfit moose…meese…mooses…. whatever. One is very small, despite having full size antlers. The other is huge, but his antlers are tiny. Together, they are a powerful force!

Lambert the Sheepish Lion (1952): A favorite for Disney fans all over, this is the classic story of a lion cub mistakenly delivered to an expectant mother sheep. He is mocked and shunned by his peers, not unlike Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, but when he’s all grown up, he’s the only one who can keep the mean ol’ wolf away!

The Little House (1952): This heartwarming classic, based on the children’s book, is very similar to the oddly absent from this set “Susie, the Little Blue Coupe.” It’s the tale of a little house who grows old, lonely, and depressed while the world around her changes, but in the end gets cheered up by new owners, a new locale, and a new coat of paint.

Adventures In Music: Melody (1953): Originally released in 3-D (a first for an American animated film), but just as enjoyable in 2-D, this is the first of the Professor Owl shorts where he teaches his class full of young birds all about the world of music. Very enjoyable animation.

Football Now and Then (1953): Here’s a fun animated short, even if you are like me and not really interested in football! Grandpa and grandson watch a televised football match pitting a modern football time with one from yesteryear!

Adventures In Music: Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom (1953): The other Oscar Winner in the bunch, here we learn the history of musical instruments in Professor Owl’s class! A true classic!

Ben and Me (1953): A personal fave that is more of a featurette than a short, sure to be a hit with American history buffs that don’t take it TOO seriously. This is the tale of Amos, a mouse voiced by Sterling Holloway, who is the real brains behind the legacy of Founding Father Benjamin Franklin!

Disc 2:

Pigs Is Pigs (1954): Disc 2 kicks off with an extremely enjoyable, highly fun musical romp about Flannery, a railroad station clerk whose strict adherence to the rules lands him in deep trouble when a shipment of lovestruck guinea pigs arrives.

Social Lion (1954): A lion captured on safari in Africa gets loose in the big city, but hardly anyone notices him! Very cute and funny, light social commentary short!

Hooked Bear (1956): One of the two widescreen cartoons in this set, this Humphrey the Bear short is as funny as anything the Looney Tunes ever did! In it, Humphrey does his best to outwit the fish, the tourists, and Ranger Woodlore in his attempts to load up some fish of his own!

Jack and Old Mac (1956): This imaginatively animated musical offering creatively illustrates jazzy renditions of “The House That Jack Built” and “Old MacDonald.” Nicely entertaining.

In the Bag (1956): The other Humphrey the Bear widescreen cartoon in this set, this hilarious short has Ranger Woodlore scheming to use the park bears to clean up after the tourists. When the reward becomes a delicious dinner, Humphrey tries and tries but can’t seem to keep his section clean! This butt-bumping extravaganza even features a cameo by Smokey the Bear!

A Cowboy Needs a Horse (1956): This captivating, musical dream shows a little boy’s sleeping fantasy of being a real cowboy, battling bandits and Indians, and saving the damsel in distress. Always wanted this one in my collection!

The Story of Anyburg, USA (1957): In a humorous and twisted tale of injustice and frivolous lawsuits, this short tells the tale of a town that places the blame for automobile accidents on the automobiles themselves!

The Truth About Mother Goose (1957): This memorable old fave is one of the gems of this set! Telling the grim, true tales behind the nursery rhymes “Little Jack Horner,” “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary,” and “London Bridge Is Falling Down,” this highly entertaining short is pretty dark for a Disney cartoon!

Paul Bunyan (1958): The bigger-than-life tale of Paul Bunyan the giant lumberjack is told here from his infancy to his retirement in a wonderful old Disney favorite!

Noah’s Ark (1959): Stop-motion animation and household items are used for a change in this tale from the pages of Genesis in the Bible. Noah builds a great Ark to carry two of every animal, along with his family, through a flood that covered the entire globe in ancient times. This reasonably loyal and jazzy cartoon is great fun, though maybe it runs a tad long when it gets into some unnecessary Hippo romance subject matter. Still, very good little short!

Goliath II (1960): This Oscar nominated classic is the funny story of a tiny elephant the size of a mouse born to the biggest elephant in the herd! Little Goliath is nothing but trouble until he wins the others’ respect by being the only one who can take on their greatest fear!

The Saga of Windwagon Smith (1961): Some may disagree, but I find this to be another of the best shorts in the set! Windwagon Smith is the tall tale of a sea captain with dreams of sailing over the American plains in a covered wagon that is part sailing ship! It’s a very fun and imaginative tale!

A Symposium On Popular Songs (1962): And, finally, my favorite cartoon on this set, simply because who doesn’t love Ludwig Von Drake, especially coupled with tons of Sherman Bros. music! Also pretty much a featurette at 19 minutes and 44 seconds in length, “A Symposium On Popular Songs” is hosted by the oddball relative of Donald Duck who takes us through the history of popular music in America, until 1962 at least. He does this for the most part by playing timely songs that he wrote himself, running with visuals of stop-motion cut-out animation same as was used for the opening of the original “Parent Trap.” For Ludwig fans, this cartoon is really the highlight of the discs! Paul Frees is hilarious!

As an obsessive Disney fan, I am likely to tell you that ALL the Disney Treasures sets are a must have, and keep `em coming! I certainly have them all! But, even for the collector who doesn’t get every tin box that Disney puts out, “Disney Rarities: Celebrated Shorts” is a must! Sure, there are some shorts that are oddly absent. Some of them are available on other Disney releases though. Many seem likely to appear in an educational shorts set in the future, hopefully. I’m dying for “Scrooge McDuck and Money,” “Winnie the Pooh Discovers the Seasons,” the “What Should I Do” series, “Harold and His Amazing Green Plants,” and Jiminy Cricket’s shorts, among others. I also am desperate for a good, unedited release of “Small One,” Sport Goofy in “Soccermania,” and “Fluppy Dogs,” to name a few. And, to be honest, even if they can get a bit redundant, I’d like to get as many of the over 50 Alice shorts (that have not been lost) as possible. Nevertheless, this set is a REAL treasure! Extras include a wonderful interview with the original Alice, Virginia Davis, enthusiastic intros by Leonard Maltin that some find annoying but I have no problem with (there is only one per disc this time, and we really should regard this man as a hero, anyway), the VERY short advertisement cartoon “A Feather In His Collar,” starring Pluto, a lovely timeline featurette showing us Walt’s history up to the introduction of Mickey Mouse, a fascinating audio commentary for “A Symposium on Popular Song” with Richard Sherman and Leonard Maltin, and, of course, a few selective art galleries. Yes, there is talk on the disc of an excerpt from a Disneyland episode detailing the making of the “Parent Trap” opening credits, however, it seems none of us have been able to locate that in the set except as snippets during Maltin’s intros. The set comes in the expected snapcase within lovely tin box, though they are continuing with not printing anything on the back of the tin and not including the paper band, and within is the standard, handy booklet, the numbered certificate of authenticity, and a nice collectible card featuring Paul Bunyan promo art. It all makes for a glorious package for the Disney fanatic. Can’t wait for wave 6!

The third, and last, season of Batman Beyond was a big step above the decline in quality that was found in the sub-par second season of the animated series, and thank God (or Paul Dini and Bruce Timm) for that. As the third season begins, Terry McGinnis (voiced by Will Friedle) has his hands full as the Batman of the future as old villains Ink, Zeta, and the Royal Flush Gang return. It gets better though, as Talia Al Ghul, the daughter of Ra’s Al Ghul, returns and makes a stunning offer to the aging Bruce Wayne, with huge results and an even bigger twist. This episode is worth picking this DVD collection up for alone as we get to see Bruce and Terry side by side fighting. It gets better with the two-parter “The Call”, as Terry gets the call of a lifetime from Superman (given a great new futuristic look) to join the Justice League in an effort to uncover a traitor, with even more shocking results! Batman also takes on Big Time, a former friend from Terry’s past, and then goes toe to toe with KOBRA. Sadly though, the series comes to an end with these episodes, but there would be more Batman Beyond. The Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (the director’s cut that is) was an excellent film which saw the return of Batman’s greatest enemy, and as a previous reviewer already mentioned, we would see an older Terry in the Justice League Unlimited episode “Epilogue” in which Terry learns a shocking secret about his real origins (and yes, it would have been oh so nice if that episode was included in this et, because that is the true end of the series). That aside, the third season of Batman Beyond is a fantastic pick up for fans of the series or Batman in general, and if you’ve never seen “Epilogue”, you should pick up the first season of Justice League Unlimited for that alone.

If you are a fan of these cartoons, and if you already own “Batman Beyond: Season One” and “Batman Beyond: Season Two,” then you really should not think twice about purchasing the final volume in the BATMAN BEYOND series because it concludes an excellent television show, and it has thirteen absolutely magnificent episodes. Here is the episode list, with a very small description of each episode, so not a lot of the plot will be ruined:

1) King’s Ransom — The Royal Flush Gang returns.

2) Untouchable — Batman must face a new villain, The Repellar.

7) The Call: Part I — Superman asks Batman to join the Justice League Unlimited.

8) The Call: Part II — Batman must comfront a traitor in the Justice League Unlimited!

9) Betrayal — Big Time returns once again and causes problems for Batman.

11) The Curse of the Kobra: Part II — The second part of “The Curse of the Kobra: Part I.”

12) Countdown — Zeta, the robot from Season Two, returns to Gotham City to find his creator…but something goes wrong!

13) Unmasked — A flashback of how Terry was once unmaked.

SPECIAL FEATURES might be another “Panel” and probably Commenteries and trailers.

I myself have not seen all of these episodes, but I can for sure tell you that they are great! I hope you buy this to add yet another excellent volume to your Timm/Dinin DVD collection!!! You will not regret it. ^_^

This is one of my all time popular movies, and I was happy as punch to peep it reach out on DVD. For those of you not familiar with it, the tale is of the figure-skating diva that can’t regain a partner, who suddenly meets her match in Doug Dorsey, a washed up hockey-player brimming with testosterone. They meet, they bicker, they tumble in appreciate. Badda-boom, badda-bing. This is more of a ‘chick’ movie than a guy movie, but it’s consuming for the entire family, IMO.

Two things withhold me from giving this DVD the 5 stars it deserves : One is cinematic, and one is something else.

1. The ending abruptly cuts off, leaving you to ‘guess’ how it ends. Some folks steal an ending like this–I do not. I want it spelled out for me!

2. There are hardly any ’special features’ on this DVD. The only one is the movie trailer. If you’re looking to collect the DVD for all the special add-ins, skip this one.

But it’s quiet one of my favorites! DB Sweeney really steals the movie away.

A very touchy Kate Mosley has dreams of being a skating champion who has tremulous off many potential partners. Douglas Dorsey has dreams of being a professional hockey player. When an wretched accident impairs his vision, and he is no longer able to compete at the professional level, his dream is altered forever. Doug and Kate are paired together toward a fresh dream.

This is a charming romantic movie. DB Sweeney and Moira Kelly have suitable on veil chemistry, and the skating is well done.
